The Anatomist by Federico Andahazi, translated by Alberto Manguel

The Anatomist is an historical novel (based on well-researched historical facts) focused on an unusual choice for one. Here Federico Andahazi relates the life of Mateo Colombo, a famous 16th Century Italian physician who gets locked up by the church for heresy because he discovers the clitoris. The Anatomist

It’s a excellently written book, that’s quick to read both because it grips you, and because of its short chapters.

The character at the heart of the novel, Mateo Colombo is a fascinating man – obsessed with whores, furthering anatomical research through liaisons with body snatchers…. Needless to say the other characters are pretty exciting too.
