2x American Short Books: “Ethan Frome” by Edith Wharton, and “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck

Both of these are stories from classic American authors focused on the subsistance world of American farming.

Of Mice and Men has been ruined for me by school – too much analysis! But it’s still a story that has many levels and can lead to long hours of debate over subjects as diverse as:

  • What is the relationship between George and Lennie?
  • Should we feel sorry for Curly’s wife?
  • What is the roll of the death of the dog in the plot?

Ethan Frome is a far more enjoyable book (and I think that would still be the case even without school!). Possibly less to debate here, but a really interesting story with a twist I wasn’t expecting at all.

It tells the story of a man called Ethan Frome and why he is as he is at the time the storyteller meets him. You journey along on the detective process. A fantastic read and just the right lenght – and easy to slip into the side of the handbag too.
